Name: Mandy
Age group: 30-35
Country: United States
Subscription/Access Policy: Need to be let in to read my stuff, alas.

Fannish Interests: 70s TV (if I don't wind up at work, I'm listening to my family snark Emergency!). Harry Potter, but I'm mainly a roleplayer and don't usually invest myself in the drama that was going on recently. I really don't watch a lot of television and movies, so sue me?
I like to post about: A lot of random stuff, really. Mainly hockey, though. I don't know why. But I'll also post about work and family.
About Me/Other Info: I still live with my parents and would like to move eventually. Also working by selling shoes to a bunch of people.

Quarantine baking thus far remains... not really a thing. Quarantine crafting, though, is in full swing. I'm more productive when I have really clear constraints (usually in the form of deadlines), and apparently 'can only work on projects I already have supplies for' is enough of one? Things I have done so far:
- built two of the gunpla kits I've had kicking around for 7+ years now
- sewn three binders I bought materials for last fall
- made an umbrella swift out of stash materials
- finished a cross stitch (started a week or two pre-lockdown)
- mounted another cross-stitch, though I still need to frame it
- almost finished a basket for mail - I have misplaced the magnets I bought to go on the back, so I need to rediscover them first
- 3D-printed some stuff on my kind of garbage printer (base has already gotten damaged and needs a reprint with some edits, sigh)
- foam head, test version in scrap foam
- replaced the worn-out belt on my dryer and cleaned the ducts
- started refinishing a dresser (separate post on that later, probably, I've been taking a lot of photos)

....Look, I have ADHD and consequently a lot of half-finished and aspirational projects.

Thank you all for sharing bread recipes with me! Attempt #1 was [profile] steorra's no-knead bread recipe, because it was about all my frazzled brain was up to.

Results were pretty good! It was chewier than I expected, given the lack of kneading, though I guess the overnight rise helped that gluten development. I didn't get a ton of rise, and the loaf was pretty dense - I suspect that's a result of my extremely old yeast, which still goes, but perhaps not as resolutely or robustly as a fresher batch would.

Bread-baking friends, any suggestions for beginner-friendly bread recipes? Working from home means I have some extra time in my days and I am determined to spend it doing things, instead of reading too many news articles on the internet and being anxious.

I have bread flour, cake flour, all-purpose flour, a whole jar of active dry yeast, and a stand mixer with a dough hook. I do not have a bread machine or a fancy oven - just a basic electric one.

I'll make a real post eventually, some day, but for now, have a fun (and slightly sweary) history of CSS post from a blog I follow, which was a trip down memory lane for me. God, CSS3 is so *good*, y'all.
If I use Calibre to de-DRM ebooks from the library, does that fuck shit up for y'all, or is it the digital equivalent of me just photocopying an entire book before I return it (ie, not really legal, but basically irrelevant to anyone else handling the book in the future). Because Adobe Digital Editions is basically a huge pain in the ass on Linux and I would like to deal with it as little as possible, but I don't want to cause trouble for the library.

EDIT: okay this may be a moot point if I can't fucking get ADE to work on Linux at *all*

(or, more accurately, the program loads, but is convinced it has no internet connection and thus won't do anything /screams)

EDIT2: SUCCESS. I had to run winecfg, and under 'libraries', set wininet to prefer the builtin (WINE) version over the native (Windows) version. Of course ADE decided to only sort of work, and retrieved my book but would not do anything else with it, so I did in fact have to get the ADE keyfile and strip the DRM in Calibre to actually oopen it.
I feel like I have seen a bunch of SFF book talk go by on my dash/reading list over the last year or two, and I have utterly failed at noting down recommendations for when I had time for novels again. Which... I do now, so please, toss some suggestions my way :)

Posting this in my journal mostly so I can find it again next year, which will be an issue if I put it anywhere else. We had trick or treating last night, as Thursday was rainy, and probably more importantly, got very windy as the night wore on. Typically for my time-disorganized-self, I ended up putting up Halloween decorations (which is to say: mostly just lights) an hour before it started. After running out of candy last year before the night was done, I kind of panicked this year and bought frankly far too much this year, but all of it is stuff I'll eat so it's not the end of the world.

Went through roughly 140 pieces of candy, including the ones I snacked on myself. I'd guess that comes out to probably 80 or 90 kids - most took one or two pieces, though if they asked, I was giving out two (see: too much candy) - it was just too much work to tell everyone 'take two'. Three or four kids grabbed a small handful (probably 3-5 pieces) - it was rare enough that I let it go without comment. Popular: Nerds, Skittles. Not popular: Nestle Crunch (doesn't surprise me), Snickers, and Butterfinger (slightly more surprising to me?). Toddlers tended to grab the Gobstoppers, I assume because they were the smallest packaging but I was mentally like 'oh no you're too baby to eat those safely'. Next year I will probably do a more curated selection - this year it was two big mix bags that had both chocolate and non-chocolate offerings.

I thought my IG -> DW zapier config had broken but no, it turns out I just haven't posted anything other than a multi-photo dump (which Zapier doesn't pick up) on IG since mid September. Which, uh, is the state of most of my social medias these days. I'm around on Discord, and I share current happenings with friends there, but nothing more concrete, really. I've unfortunately been struggling even more than usual with constant tiredness since the spring, with unfortunately still no known physiological cause. May try to convince my PCP to refer me for a sleep study even if the one I had done back in like... 2011 didn't show anything.

In OTHER news, however, I sat down and picked up my conversion of the /customize pages and they are now almost done - at the point where I need to cajole other people into testing because I've stared at everything so long I don't see mistakes any more. API stuff is also coming along, though it's more fiddly and tedious to work on.

I also picked up my read-through of the Vorkosigan books again, and finished off everything except Flowers of Vashnoi, which I haven't been able to find DRM-free yet (and it's not in the store for my ereader). Definitely understand why a lot of my friends are fans - I thoroughly enjoyed them. So if you see me leaving kudos on your fic from years ago, that's why.

Reminder to me, from me: having a place for everything to live doesn't help with clutter if you never put anything back where it belongs.

(though it does make the inevitable massive clean-up binge go faster)
A slightly belated happy Friday the 13th from me and Storm (who wanted second dinner, not to be manhandled into selfies at 2am). Just got back from Xmortis and my feet are d o n e. #catsofinstagram #blackcat #goth
